REST.

Discovering the Seven Types of Rest
Have you ever noticed that even after a full night of sleep, you can still feel drained? That’s because rest is about so much more than sleep. True rest is about stillness, surrender, and allowing God to restore us in every part of our lives.

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Rest is not something we earn; it is a gift. It’s not the end of the story—it’s the starting point.
In our class Nearer to God: Stillness & Surrender, we explored how rest is multidimensional. Below are the seven types of rest and how you can begin to weave them into your life as soft rituals of renewal.

1. Physical Rest
This is the most obvious type—sleep, naps, or gentle movement like stretching. Physical rest reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and worthy of care.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Create a bedtime wind-down routine with prayer and stillness.
2. Mental Rest
Our minds are often overloaded with decisions, problem-solving, and constant input. Mental rest comes when we quiet our thoughts and let go of the need to have it all figured out.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Try a few minutes of silence or deep breathing before transitioning between tasks.
3. Emotional Rest
We all carry emotions that need space to be released. Emotional rest happens when we allow ourselves to feel without judgment and bring our hearts honestly before God.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Journal a prayer where you pour out your true feelings to Him.
4. Spiritual Rest
This is the deepest rest—the rest of being anchored in God’s presence, purpose, and peace. It’s when we remember we don’t have to strive; we simply need to abide.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Begin your morning with a scripture that centers you in God’s love.
5. Social Rest
Some connections drain us, while others give life. Social rest is about choosing to spend time with people who nourish your soul and creating boundaries where needed.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Reach out to a life-giving friend and plan a meaningful connection.
6. Creative Rest
We live in a world that demands constant output. Creative rest is about stepping back to receive beauty and inspiration again.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Take a slow walk in nature and notice the details of God’s creation.
7. Sensory Rest
Our senses are bombarded by screens, noise, and busyness. Sensory rest is about quieting the overload and finding peace in stillness.
✨ Soft ritual idea: Turn off notifications and sit in silence for 5 minutes.

Creating Your Rest Rhythm
Here’s how to begin:
Reflect on which type of rest you are most in need of right now. Ask the Holy Spirit: Lord, where do I need Your renewal most? Choose one small, soft ritual to practice this week.
Remember, rest is not laziness—it is wisdom. Rest is not a reward—it is a rhythm. Every time you pause to rest, you are saying: “God, I trust You more than I trust my striving.”
A Closing Prayer
God of stillness and surrender, draw us nearer to You. Quiet our bodies, calm our minds, and heal our hearts. Teach us to enter Your rest—not just in sleep, but in every breath.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
✨ If you want to go deeper, revisit your notes from class and reflect on what type of rest God is calling you to honor in this season. Let one small ritual draw you nearer to Him.
